An oil coolers primary function is to cool the engine lubricating oil, which in turn lowers the temperature of critical engine components, primarily the engine bearings. When oil exceeds normal operating temperatures, it loses viscosity and lubricating properties. When this happens, the oil begins to break down and deteriorate very quickly.
